Chemical Bonding and Shape of Molecules
Science | Chemistry Class 11
Geometry of Molecules
The Specific arrangement of atoms in molecule and the bond angles determines the shape of particular molecule. Modern techniques such as X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction are used to determine the geometry of molecule.
The various theories are employed to decide the shape of molecules, which are as follows:
- Valence shell electron pair repulsion theory (VSEPR theory)
- Valance bond theory (VBT theory)
- Molecular orbital theory (MOT)
Out of these, only first two are discussed here.
